"Since antiquity calligraphy has been the core of all Islamic art. Islamic civilization has produced masterpieces by great practitioners with profound traditional impact. Arabic Calligraphy entails the visual representation of lofty ideas in a rich aesthetic dimension. This art, however, is not unique to the Middle East or India. Sophisticated calligraphy has been practiced in different cultures all around the globe, including China and Japan. Among the mutual elements shared between Abrahamic religions, namely, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, is calligraphy which connects these otherwise diverse cultures. The artistic expression of Biblical scriptures including the Book of Kells and the contemporary multi-million dollar project regarding Saint –John’s Bible, as well as verses from the Holy Quran come from the same tradition of aesthetic representation of the ‘Word of God’ in all its visual and spiritual glory. Allah says in the Holy Quran:‘’O mankind! We created you from a single pair of male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other not that ye may despise each other’ (Al-Quran, 49:13). As Muslims we strive to bring harmony between faiths, and calligraphy enables productive inter-religious dialogue and communication in order to strengthen mutual understanding and peaceful co-existence."
